Pacific Islanders being ripped off, says NZ Ministry

The New Zealand Government is to make it easier for Pacific people in New Zealand to send money home.

At the moment charges to send money to the region can be up to 25 percent of the amount involved.

But regulation changes, which could be in force by the end September, could bring that down to about seven percent.

The Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs says sending money to the Pacific is almost five times more expensive than to other regions.

Its chief executive Colin Tukuitonga says there's something seriously wrong that.

"We're really just trying to get at the problem where it is most concerning at the moment, and that's really the people in the middle...I hate to be dramatic, but ripping people who can least afford it off."
