Scientists and emergency planners from around the Western Pacific are gathering in Honolulu this week to plan for, hold drills and discuss a response for a tsunami disaster.
People from Micronesia, Guam, American Samoa, and Palau are at the conference collaborating with their colleagues from Hawaii.
In 1946 an earthquake near Alaska generated a Tsunami that killed 159 people in Hawaii.
Jeff LaDouce of the National Weather Service says this is an example of a major disaster that requires people to be trained.
He said emergency response personnel need regular practice to ensure they are ready to deal with future natural disasters.
