11:13 am on 19 August 2008

Four candidates have so far been put named in Solomon Islands to contest the East Honiara parliamentary seat vacated by Charles Dausabea who has been jailed for fraud.

One of the four is the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health, Dr George Manimu, who last week resigned to be eligible for the elections.

Official nominations for candidates close in a week.

The Chief Electoral Officer, John Babalu, says it is early days yet as the seat is known to attract large numbers of candidates.

Mr Babalu says in Solomon Islands almost anyone can be nominated as a candidate.
