Solomons MP convicted on two criminal charges

A Solomon Islands MP, Central Guadalcanal's Peter Shannel, has been found guilty on two criminal charges, including assault.

Shannel faced three charges in the Central Magistrates Court.

They were unlawful wounding, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a weapon in a restricted area without a reasonable excuse.

He was found guilty on the assault and weapon charges.

His sentencing has been adjourned until later this month to allow his lawyer to make submissions.

Shannel faces a possible jail term of five years.
