16 French Polynesian politicians in campaign financing woes

A Tahiti daily newspaper says 16 candidates in French Polynesia's March municipal elections have had their campaign finance records rejected.

The Nouvelles de Tahiti says the 16 risk to be declared ineligible if next month's court hearing upholds the reported findings.

The report follows news that the mayor of Mahina, Emile Vernaudon, who made history by being elected while in jail, was found to have irregular campaign accounts.

The Mahina council installed him in office by placing a ribbon around his photograph in the mayor's chair.

Some of the 16 affected politicians failed to make it to the second round of the municipal election.
