9:49 am on 6 August 2008

The final report of the Commission of Inquiry into the April 2007 riots in the Solomon's capital, Honiara, has been handed to Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua.

The Prime Minister says the report will not be made public until cabinet decides.

"Their advice and findings will be tabled before the cabinet who will make the final decisions on the release of the entire report or facts, findings, conclusions and recommendations of the report, and on the way forward with regard to the implementation of the recommendations therein."

Dr Sikua says there have been concerns about the safety of those who came forward to give evidence during the inquiry.

My government's priority is the overall safety of the people of Solomon Islands, our city of Honiara, and the human rights of individuals who might be implicated in the report.

The Commission has taken nearly 5 months to hear all those who were willing

to tell their version of the event.
