The National Disaster Centre in Papua New Guinea says more and more people are suffering from asthma due to continued ash fall from an active volcano in Rabaul.

The Justice Minister and acting Governor General of PNG, Dr Allan Marat is calling for Papua New Guinea's government and relevant authorities to declare a state of emergency as emissions from Mt Tavurvur continue to affect the people.

The disaster centre's Acting Director Martin Mose says while many have suffered greatly from the effects of the ash fall, he expects more will die from asthma.

"People in the New Britain area, especially the upper area will continue to be affected. And I think as far as the Gazelle Peninsula, they may continue to be affected by that. And we are bound to see an increase of asthmatic activities."

Martin Mose says an effective solution would be to evacuate all remaining residents living near the volcano.
