Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister criticises Fiji over poll delay

Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister, Stephen Smith, has criticised the Fijian interim government for postponing elections.

The interim prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, promised to hold an election by March next year.

But Mr Smith says the commodore has now reneged on that agreement.

Mr Smith says with ample time and a stable environment, there is no justification for not holding an election.

He said there is still eight to nine months to go and there is no reason, subject to the political will of the interim government, why such an election cannot be held.
