American Samoa explores new power generation options

2:14 pm on 11 July 2008

The American Samoa Power Authority is planning to investigate alternative means of generating power, including from the waste at its Futiga landfill.

The company's CEO Michael Keyser says there is the potential to save up to 15 million dollars a year in diesel costs.

But he says using wave power, wind or solar energy to generate such savings would require huge capital resources.

A professional consulting firm is to analyse the garbage at the landfill and assess the merits of an energy-from-waste facility.

Mr Keyser says such a facility would reduce waste by 90 percent and would allow the power company to extend the life of the landfill by a significant margin.
