6:28 pm on 3 July 2008

The United Nations Development Programme and the Tongan government have agreed to explore the possibilities of civics education in their new five-year country programme.

Through to 2012, the UNDP says its assistance will respond to development challenges in the areas of governance, the environment and poverty reduction.

This includes looking into the provision of financial services for people in rural areas, training for MPs, and through civics education aiming to help Tongans participate in the political process.

The UNDP will also look at forming partnerships to develop tension reduction projects that engage vulnerable people such as the women and youth.
