New Zealand leads medals table at Oceania Championships

Samoa's Aunese Curreen picked up the first gold medal at the Oceania championships in Northern Marianas beating favourite Brendan Whelan of Australia in the six kilometre country race.

The 27-year-old 800 metres specialist whose off to Beijing finished in 21 minutes and 5 seconds, four seconds ahead of Whelan whose is favoured in the five thousand and half marathon.

Salome Dell picked up Papua New Guinea's first gold, winning the women's open 3-kilometre race.

New Zealand finished one and two in the womens three kilometre run, with Laura Nagel and Danielle Trevis putting their country at the top of the medals table with their gold and silver respectively.

Samoa, Solomon Islands and PNG are tied for second while Guam is in third place.
