Fiji's interim Prime Minister Commodore, Frank Bainimarama, has suspended talks with the Forum Joint Working Group amidst calls by the group not to do so.
The Ministry of Information acting deputy secretary, Major Neumi Leweni, said it would not be right to say that Fiji has pulled out of talks, only that discussion was suspended for the moment.
The Fiji Times says a media conference scheduled for Friday, where the interim regime was expected to announce its decision, was postponed at the last minute.
The Pacific Islands Forum-Fiji Joint Working Group had urged the interim regime to remain a member and stay engaged with its regional neighbours.
Commodore Bainimarama had earlier questioned the merit of Fiji being engaged in talks with the Joint Working Group.
Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to Fiji and the chairman of Forum-Fiji Joint Working Group, Peter Eafeare, said the forum encouraged Fiji to continue to be a member.
The working group was created by the Forum Foreign Ministers at their meeting in March 2007 to monitor the situation in Fiji.
