Solomons telecom strike with no end in sight

4:12 pm on 19 June 2008

The strike by Solomon Telekom workers in Honiara looks set to continue indefinitely.

Employees of Our Telekom took industrial action on Tuesday in response to lock-out measures by the employer, acting ahead of a trades disputes panel decision on a long-running grievance.

The lawyer representing the workers, Billy Titiulu, says he has asked the workers to end their strike as the government is also looking into the matter.

"I've asked them, I've asked them to return to work because the government is already looking through the grievances, the conciliation process. I think they will meet o Tuesday. I cannot force them to go to work and they have decided not to go to work. That's where it is."

The ANZ Bank is meanwhile still unable to process any international transactions as some of the telecommunication lines are still down.

Telekom management is now also investigating reports of sabotage of some of its communication cables by some of the striking workers.
