American Samoa bus and taxi fares go up

Bus and taxi fares in American Samoa will be going up next month.

The Commerce Commission, which regulates commercial transporation in the territory has filed notice that effective July 1st, taxi and bus fares will be increasd 50 cents across the board.

This will be the first taxi fare increase in more than 15 years.

The last bus fare increase was four years ago.

The students fare which is now 25 cents for all bus routes will be doubled.

The Commerce Commission is also banning smoking in taxis and buses when the new fares go into effect.

It is outlawing small aiga buses which are four wheel drive vehicles transformed into buses.

It also requires all taxis to be painted yellow effective January 1st 2011.

Also effective January 1, 2010, all commercial vehicles with tinted windows will be prohibited.
