Fiji's Qarase banks on MSG backing for 2009 polls

Fiji's interim Prime Minister has arrived in Vanuatu where it's hoped fellow Melanesian leaders will persuade him to hold elections, as promised, by March next year.

In recent statements, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has said a vote will not be held until a People's Charter is in place.

The ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, would like to see direct discussions at the MSG summit to persuade the Commodore to stick to his promises over a poll date:

"I'm sure he will give his undertaking again to the group that there will be elections by March 2009. I hope that the group will speak to him again frankly and urge him that it is absolutely essential that we should have the general election by March 2009."

Mr Qarase says over the last 18 months the interim administration has gone back on a number of promises, so there are more and more doubts over their undertakings.
