1:41 pm on 22 May 2008

Samoa police have urged members of the public to report any alleged sexual crime.

The call has been prompted by the growing number of sexual offences in Samoa involving men and young girls who are often related.

The call comes after two men appeared in the Supreme Court this week on charges of incest and indecent assaultof their own daughters.

In another case a man is facing trial for the alleged indecent assault of two young school girls who are his cousins.

The police spokesman and assistant commissioner, Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, says though sexual offences involving family members were hardly reported in the past, people these days are more aware of the seriousness of such crimes.

He has also encouraged people to report any matter involving sexual offences to the NGOs who are dealing with such issues.
