Thousands of dollars have been collected by the Red Cross society in Samoa to help relief work in China's earthquake in Sichuan province and the hurricane in Myanmar.

A Red Cross official says money has been collected from members of the public during a fundraising drive held in town last week but the society is expecting to receive more donations from people and organizations this week.

Meanwhile the Samoa government has approved a donation of 150 thousand US dollars for the same relief effort.

According to a government source, 100 thousand will go to relief efforts for the earthquake in China while 50 thousand will go to the hurricane victims in Myanmar.
