Cannery in American Samoa will look at absorbing next wage hike

10:10 am on 30 April 2008

Starkist Samoa says it will make some changes to absorb the next 50 cent increase in the minimum wage.

The next increase will go into effect on May 25.

Star Kist Samoa is planning to stop its free bus service for employees if the wage hike is not averted.

The cannery has also informed division managers that several changes will be made to reduce costs, and employees are to be informed about the changes.

No layoffs were mentioned, but managers were told that the cannery would be taking whatever step is necessary to keep operations afloat with the pending wage hike.
