The seven remaining garment factories in the CNMI have sent an urgent message to the Commonwealth's elected leaders requesting them to take action to help the industry to continue operating.

In a letter, the seven Saipan factories stated, that "the death of this industry is greatly over exaggerated, but doing nothing to change will fulfill that prediction.

As a group, the companies asked the Fitial administration and Legislature to consider a range of initiatives including efforts to seek an amendment of the special tariff privilege that created the industry 25 years ago.

The companies said the one that exists now is almost meaningless with newer free trade agreements existing in foreign countries.
