One of the two kings on the French Pacific island of Futuna, the Tuigaifo, has been deposed after a unanimous decision taken by the four chiefly clans.
Few details have been reported but the removal is said to have taken place last week.
No date has been set to elect a successor.
The neighbouring island of Wallis has been without a king for nearly a year as attempts to find a replacement for Tomasi Kulimoetoke have failed.
The three Polynesian kings are the only ones recognised within the French jurisdiction.
