Fiji Law Society says ban on International Bar Association makes no sense

The president of Fiji Law Society has expressed concern over the International Bar Association's cancelled visit.

The IBA says it cancelled its visit planned for this week because the interim government has banned them, although the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum denies this.

Isireli Fa says it will take up the matter with the Attorney General this week, and that Mr Sayed-Khaiyum's concerns about the IBA prejudicing court cases has no basis.

"The Fiji Society is very, very, concerned with the approach taken by the interim government in placing a ban on members of the IBA coming to Fiji on a scheduled trip. The decision to ban the IBA makes no sense and in the short and medium term really hurts Fiji more than anything else."

Isireli Fa says the planned visit by the IBA was also going to meet with a cross section of Fiji society, including officals from the interim government and judiciary.
