Levuka Town has been selected to be nominated as Fiji's first World Heritage site.

The interim minister for culture and heritage, Filipe Bole, says the inscription of a site on the World Heritage List brings an increase in public awareness of the site and of its outstanding values.

Mr Bole told the Fiji Times that this also gives Fiji the potential to grab its share of the tourist dollars alongside major competitors.

The department of culture and heritage, in collaboration with UNESCO, is now working to see to that the project comes to fruition.

World Heritage is the designation for places on earth that are of outstanding universal value to humanity and as such, have to be protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
