NZ helps mark Bougainville police project

5:30 pm on 30 January 2008

50 regular police and 50 community constables trained by New Zealand police took part in a march-past in Buka, in Papua New Guinea's Bougainville province, this morning.

The New Zealand High Commissioner in PNG, Niels Holm, who attended the event, says when the programme was first started three years ago it was restricted to the training of community constables.

"The results have been so effective that we've ended up with unpaid community constables much more effective than the regular Bougainville police. So it was decided with NZ Aid support that we should expand the training programme to the regular Bougainville police and this morning's parade was to mark that occasion."
