The High Court in Suva, Fiji has ruled in favour of a man who was hit by a stray bullet during the height of the mutiny shootout on November 2, 2000 and ordered the Military to compensate him.
Fiji live reports that Justice Roger Coventry said the military was liable in negligence to James Pillay, who sued the military after being hit in the abdomen by a stray bullet.
The court heard that Mr Pillay was waiting for a taxi near the Queens Elizabeth Barracks, Nabua, where the shootout took place when he was hit.
Justice Coventry says the military breached its duty where it allowed men disbanded members of the elite Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit access not only to guns but to ammunition.
Justice Coventry said he will deal with the assessment of damages at another date.
