Fresh push to set up regional human rights commission in Pacific

4:34 pm on 11 December 2007

A regional human rights commission is again being proposed after a meeting of Pacific Island judges gave support to such an idea.

The gathering in Brisbane was organised by the Pacific Regional Rights Resources Team, a Suva-based training and technical resource organisation specialising in human rights advocacy.

One of its senior trainers, Filipo Marsaurua, says Pacific nations have given their backing to supporting human rights through the Forum's Pacific Plan.

He says in the meantime as much support as possible is needed for a Regional Human Rights Commission:

"It is such a controversial issue at the moment, the more support we get from the states, the more support that we get from the stakeholders and those involved the better and more productive I dare say in the establishment of a regional human rights commission."
