There are expectations that dozens of Sri Lankan refugees on Nauru will now be accepted into Australia as the new Labor Government begins the process of dismantling the detention centre on the island.
More than 70 of a group of 83 Sri Lankans were found to be refugees by Australian authorities three months ago, but they have not been granted asylum in Australia.
The new Government has accepted seven Burmese on the island are refugees and says they will be moved to Australia within days.
David Manne, a lawyer with the Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre, says he is hopeful that the same approach will be taken to the Sri Lankans.
"We are hopeful that in a short period that they too will be granted visas to Australia, so that they can also get on with rebuilding their lives in safety and dignity. There is absolutely no reason we can see why that that should not occur and there is everyone reason for why it should."
