Cyclone Daman passes north of Vanua Levu

9:41 am on 8 December 2007

Forecasters in Fiji say Cyclone Daman which is passing just north of the country's second largest island, Vanua Levu, has brought hurricane force winds to the northern tip of island.

Fiji's Meteorological Service says although the worst is over, the winds are expected to continue for some time.

It says the hurricane passed through the island of Cikobia - north of Vanua Levu - and is still affecting smaller islands to the south-east

The Service has not yet had reports from the area on the extent of damage.

Earlier, the owner of a resort at Labasa on Vanua Levu told the Fiji Times newspaper there'd been heavy rain there, and winds of about 40 kilometres an hour.

The storm is expected to swing back round to the south east, and head into waters between Fiji and Tonga.
