Counting of postal votes in Marshall Islands general election gets underway

8:03 am on 4 December 2007

Counting of postal votes in the Marshall Islands general election is to get underway today two weeks after the poll.

Preliminary results indicate that the opposition Aelon Kein Ad party has so far won more seats than the ruling United Democratic Party, but not a clear majority.

Once the postal votes are counted and final results are announced, there's a two week window for candidates to challenge a result or demand a recount.

With mounting complaints over polling irregularities, several challenges are expected.

Some candidates like David Kramer, an Indpendent, say there's been a conflict of interest in having ballots at the post office because staff there are associated with government candidates.
