Council of Trade Unions in Solomons says PM should step down or recall parliament

The Solomon Islands Council of Trade Unions or SICTU is calling for the Prime Minister to either step down or recall Parliament immediately.

The call followed a meeting of the Solomon Islands Council of Trade Unions national executive.

The SICTU National Secretary, Tony Kagovai, told Solomon Times online that it is in the best interest of the nation that the current political impasse be resolved with dignity and in a peaceful manner.

He says SICTU believes Manasseh Sogavare no longer has the confidence of Parliament or Solomon Islanders and he should step down.

He says if the Prime Minister refuses to step down, the best way to test whether he should still be in office is to recall Parliament.

Mr Kagovai says instead of rebuilding the country, this government has squandered two precious years defending such characters as the disgraced Attorney-General, Julian Moti, and the controversial Police Commissioner, Jahir Khan.
