Rabuka says Fiji regime should substaniate plot allegation

2:37 pm on 7 November 2007

A former Fiji prime minister and 1987 coup leader, Sitiveni Rabuka, says the interim government should substantiate its alleged assassination plot.

11 people are facing charges over the alleged conspiracy that targetted key leaders.

According to the military commander, due process will be followed but among the suspects are two New Zealanders who are reported to have suffered beatings at the hands of the security forces.

The case of the main suspects has been adjourned until tomorrow as the defence is seeking bail.

Mr Rabuka says those alleging a plot should substantiate their case.

"At the moment, the government can, should move very quickly to substantiate the allegation. If not just turn their back on it and say, well we thought that was happening."
