Fiji's deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has come out in favour of the interim government's proposal for a one-man, one-vote electoral system.
Mr Qarase has told Radio Legend that serious consideration should be given to the proposal.
His comments come after provisional census figures show that indigenous Fijians now comprise over 57% of the population while ethnic Indians have fallen to 37%.
Under a one-man, one vote electoral system this would ensure that indigenous Fijians will always dominate parliament and the political life of the country.
Mr Qarase says his view before the last election was to start heading towards proportional representation and work towards a one-man, one-vote system.
He says a lot of Fijians who opposed a common roll would be changing their thinking now.
Mr Qarase has also attributed the sharp fall in the Indian population to the successive coups since 1987 which, he says, saw Indians migrating in large numbers.
