American Samoan Congressman clarifies protocol issues

6:51 pm on 1 November 2007

The American Samoan member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says he appreciates the call by Governor Togiola Tulafono for a review of the territory's relationship with the United States.

This follows the recent Pacific Islands Forum meeting at which protocol dictated that the US federal delegate took precedence over those attending from US regional territories.

But Faleomavaega says there is a set way official representation is organised.

"We have to understand the proper protocols even among the state governors and territorial governors. Whenever there are regional or internationla conferences, the federal government always takes the lead on these types of meetings, just like the Forum meeting."
