RAMSI commander can't say when Solomon Islanders will take over policing

The commander of RAMSI's police arm says he has no idea when Solomon Islands will be able to take responsibility for its own law enforcement.

The Australian-led mission held a joint planning day with Solomon Islands police managers in Honiara on Friday.

The Commander of the Participating Police Force, Denis McDermott, says concerns raised by locals included whether the Solomons force is getting enough mentoring and training, the need for better housing for officers and whether they can afford to maintain their vehicles.

He says the meeting marked a step forward in relations with local recruits.

But Mr McDermott says he can't say when the country will be able to do without foreign police.

"We're not even looking at that. The one thing we don't want is failure. The Solomon Island police force, they don't want that either, and I'm not even going to hazard a guess."
