US sanctions against Fiji will stay until election

The United States says the Fiji interim prime minister's pledge to hold elections by March 2009 made at the Tonga Forum is a step in the right direction.

But in a statement, the US State Department says certain American assistance to Fiji will remain suspended under US law until a democratically elected government is in place.

The statement says the US will continue to work closely with the Pacific Forum and its member states in support of a return to democracy in Fiji as soon as possible.

The US has called on the interim administration to work with the Pacific Forum to produce a credible roadmap to elections as soon as possible.
