Low key start to American Samoa teachers strike

10:53 am on 10 October 2007

The first strike by American Samoa public school teachers is set to begin this morning at Utulei Beach.

The strike is being organized by the President of Common Cause American Samoa Ben Teo, a social studies teacher at Tufuna High School.

About 22 teachers attended a meeting that Te'o called on Saturday to discuss today's strike.

The public school system employs more than 1,000 teachers.

The Department of Education says it will send in staff from the DOE Central Office, to fill any vacant positions.
