Vanuatu newspaper publisher denies revealing sensitive material in riot inquiry reports

The publisher of Vanuatu's Daily Post newspaper denies that his publication of findings from a Commision of Inquiry report into the March 3 clashes in Port Vila disclosed sensitive state secrets.

However Marc Neil-Jones has confirmed he has been asked by the Attorney General to return the full report from the Inquiry into the violence which left three people dead in a tribal conflict.

The Attorney General says the council of ministers is concerned that news media outlets had published details of the report before they had released their own summary, because aspects of national security are at stake.

But Mr Neil-Jones says the Commissioner of the Inquiry only gave media one of two reports of the findings:

"The other one was a more comprehensive report which was the supposed sensitive one which she made clear in the public report was for government eyes only because that would have security implications. The summary of the findings which we were given contained nothing that was a supposed state secret."
