Fiji soldier faces British court martial after assault in Germany

A Fijian soldier serving in the British Army in Germany is to face court martial for the involuntary manslaughter of a fellow Fijian soldier in the same regiment.

Lance Corporal Alipate Tuisawau, 30, died after being assaulted in a bar in Osnabruck in Germany.

Both men were serving in the First Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

A statement from the British high commission in Suva has expressed regret and sympathy to Lance Corporal Tuisawau's family on Nairai Island.

The statement from public affairs officer Vineeta Nand, says a Fiji national in the British Army is in military custody pending trial by court martial.

Lance Corporal Tuisawau had served a tour of duty in Iraq before his regiment was redeployed to Germany.
