Qarase cancels travel plans as Air Fiji claims pressure from military

Fiji's deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, is claiming that the military has blocked his plan to return to Suva on Friday by instructing Air Fiji not to allow him to board any of its planes.

Mr Qarase has told Radio Legend that his travel plan has been cancelled for the time being.

He says Air Fiji is the only airline serving his home island and therefore he is unable to travel.

The military spokesman, Lt Col Mosese Tikoitoga, says the allegations seem like a ploy by Mr Qarase to gain sympathy and support within Fiji and internationally.

He says the military has nothing to do with whether Mr Qarase travels or not.

Lt Col Tikoitoga says the court has given Mr Qarase freedom of movement and he has been talking for several months about coming to Suva.

Air Fiji's chief executive, Sialeni Vuetaki, says the airline did receive instructions from the military that it should not transport Mr Qarase on Friday.

But Lt Col Tikoitoga says he can confirm that no such direction was issued by anyone in the military.

He says it was irresponsible of the airline chief executive to accept a directive from an individual through a telephone conversation and assume that it was from the military without checking with the proper authorities.

Lt Col Tikoitoga says Air Fiji should lodge a complaint with the police.
