China approves Ah Koy as Fiji ambassador

China has now given the interim Fiji regime the green light to formalise the appointment of Sir James Ah Koy to head Fiji's embassy in Beijing.

Fiji's foreign affairs permanent secretary, Ross Ligairi, says the formal endorsement was received yesterday.

Sir James, who is a businessman and a former government minister, is expected to take up his appointment before the end of the month.

He replaces Colonel Jeremaia Waqanisau, who was recently recalled by the interim government.

The news agency, Pacnews, says the military spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni, who has been earmarked as the new counsellor for embassy in China, will leave the country for a four-year posting next week.
