7.2 earthquake strikes southeast of Vanuatu

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the southeast of Santo in Vanuatu early this morning.

It says the quake was at a depth of 172.7 km and the epicenter was 1,996 km northeast of Brisbane, Australia.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
