Digicel in PNG wins court injuction against PNG telecommunications authority

Digicel has won a court injunction to stop the Papua New Guinea telecommunications authority PANGTEL from shutting it down.

PNG's Telikom has been the country's sole phone network provider and has vigorously opposed competition, even blocking interconnection between its network and Digicel's.

Digicel labelled the attempted shut-down illegal and went to court after PANGTEL had revoked Digicel's radio wave licences.

Digicel has spent about 150 million US dollars, rolling out its new network in PNG, building transmission towers and employing 800 staff.
