University scholarship scandal may be Kiribati election issue

9:50 am on 23 July 2007

The controversial awarding of Kiribati university scholarships in 2006 to unqualified students is likely to be a key election issue for some voters.

Registration for voters and candidate nominations close next Wednesday, before voters go to the polls on August 22nd.

Our correspondent, Roz Terubea, says although a commission of inquiry examined the incident, the outcome report was never publicly released.

Instead a report summary was released to media, but didn't specify who was directly responsible for the bungle.

He says that questions remain over the scholarship allocation.

Mr Terubea says it is unclear whether the next government will ressurect the matter.

"I think the thing about the scholarship has died its own death, but it still lingers on that some people who were actually affected by it and they're still they got complaints from this and they still inquring to government what's going to be done."
