Nauru grateful for Australian aid renewal

Nauru's government has expressed gratitude for Australia's continued financial support in the health and education sectors.

Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer visited Nauru earlier this week when he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the local administration.

The MOU confirmed a renewed annual aid package from Canberra worth about 15 million US dollars.

Nauru's acting secretary of Foreign Affairs, Pyon Deiye, says Mr Downer's visit was a success.

"The whole purpose of the visit was to sign the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding between Nauru and Australia. Everything went well. The MOU that was signed strongly supports the education and health ministries of the government of Nauru, which Nauru is very thankful of."

Pyon Deiye says there is no change under the new MOU to arrangements for the offshore detention centre which will continue to be serviced and maintained by Australia.
