Samoan village council wants to shut down hydropower plant

5:30 pm on 19 July 2007

The village council of Ta'elefaga Fagaloa in Samoa is reportedly planning to force the closure of a nearby power station.

The village mayor, Tulima Sa, says people have been suffering from a bad smell from the dam, especially at night.

He says when power is generated, the lake level drops, leaving just the mud that causes the bad smell.

The mayor has sought help from the Siosiomaga Society for a report before the village lawyer will finalise legal action against the power company and the government.

The hydro power plant was set up by the Electric Power Corporation in 1993.
