Police lift blockade of New Caledonia's public broadcaster

1:16 pm on 18 July 2007

Police in New Caledonia have broken up a blockade of the premises of the public broadcaster, RFO.

The blockade was set up by the USTKE union to back a demand that a long-time casual worker be given a permanent position.

The French high commission authorised the police action on the grounds that no advance notice had been given as set out by law.

Last year, a strike at RFO lasted for seven months.

Media in New Caledonia have consistently expressed concerns at the way they have been targetted.
