Fiji's current account deficit doubled last year compared to what it was in 2005.

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics says the deficit last year reached 707-million US dollars compared with 390-million the previous year.

It has attributed the alarming deficit to a surge in imports and a decline in exports.

The deficit occurred despite remittances of large sums of money by Fiji nationals working abroad.
