Fiji military spokesman designated for diplomatic posting

The longtime spokesman for the Fiji military, Major Neumi Leweni, has been appointed the defence attaché designate at the Fiji embassy in China.

Fiji TV reports that this has been confirmed by the permanent secretary for foreign affairs, Ross Ligairi.

Major Leweni has been attached to the foreign affairs ministry where he is undergoing orientation for his new assignment.

The appointment is seen as significant because of the suspension of defence cooperation by Australia and New Zealand since the military takeover in December.

Major Leweni is expected to work closely with the ambassador designate to China, the former Fijian finance minister and multimillionaire business tycoon, Sir James Ah Koy.

The headquarters of Sir James' business empire is based in New Zealand.

But, he says, he is not too worried about travel restrictions placed on appointees of the Fiji interim administration because he answered the call of his country and is now only one cog in the management of his company.
