Commonwealth broadcasters condemn action against prominent Fiji broadcaster

10:02 am on 6 July 2007

The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association has joined other organisations and individuals criticising moves by the Fiji military to prevent the former CEO of the national broadcaster from leaving the country.

In an open letter to the Fiji interim adinistration the Association's Secretary General, Elizabeth Smith, says the CBA is dismayed by an action, which she says, will bring further worldwide criticism of the current regime in Fiji.

Mrs Smith says Mr Herman is an eminent and respected public service broadcaster who has served the people of Fiji well over many years.

She says the CBA very much hopes that he will soon be able to take up his new broadcasting post in Vanuatu.
