Tonga's new NEDC gets millions to develop strategies

Tonga's new National Economic Development Council has been allocated over 7-million US dollars under the government's 2007-2008 budget.

The new government entity, which will set up development strategies, is being chaired by the Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele, with 11 other members .

The Matangi Tonga online reports the council will look at how to implement private sector initiatives in agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure, as well as consider strategies in regards to investment and exports.

There is also a recommendation for it to establish a Trade and Investment Board, a small credit union banking facility, and a Tonga Market Centre in Auckland.
