The Marshall islands president, Kessai Note, is in Taiwan on a private visit.
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says this marks Dr Note's sixth visit to the country since his first state visit in 2002.
He is expected to call on Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-bian, during the week long visit.
